Cinnamon, Apple and Oat Porridge

Tired of plain old porridge?
We loved our breakfast so much this morning I had to post this so that everyone could have some mid winter joy first thing. No fancy ingredients, hearty and sustaining. Just what you need to get you going on these cold mornings. You spend a small amount of time preparing the ingredients and let the Thermomix look after the cooking while you have a shower or get the kids ready. This is when you really appreciate the time-saving capability of the Thermomix.

Cinnamon, Apple and Rolled Oat Porridge
Ingredients
2cm cinnamon stick
15 grams brown sugar
2 apples quartered remove the seeds
80 grams rolled oats
625 grams water

Method
Throw cinnamon and sugar in the Thermomix bowl (make sure the bowl is dry)
Process on speed 9 for 20 seconds or until cinnamon is powdered
Add the apples and grate for 3 seconds on speed 5
Add oats and water, cook at 100 degrees for 10 minutes on speed 1
Go and have a shower, come back in ten minutes and pour out 3 large bowls of porridge.
Serve with yoghurt, milk of your choice or just as is.

What ?? No cinnamon stick to suck?

Sounds yummy. Sticky rice without salt I can do, but I must have salt in my porridge and prefer it thick (like myself) so do it in reverse at 90°C.

Have you tried storing the cinnamon sticks in castor sugar to impart some flavour?

I don't know what came over me. A mere oversight on my part.
Quite obviously, I do have to get busy with the salt. A new world awaits me.
Haven't tried the cinnamon sugar either-so much to do and so little time.

I like it thick too so I also do 90 degrees and reverse speed 1. Plus I can only buy thick cut oats. I inspect oats very closely before buying. I offended Joe of Fairfield recently telling him that both his organic and biod oats were crap due to cut. Apple and pear is a staple in ours. Plus goji berries and linseeds. Lawsie be I love porridge and the extra 10 minutes of a morning since I bought my thermomix never fails to thrill. I can't imagine how I used to stand there stirring at such a busy time of day.

This didn't work for me at all. After 20 minutes I still only had glop. Are you using quick-cooking oats?

Rick's Thermomix Blog said...

Sorry Alexis, glop isn't good. It seems that different oats can cook up quite differently at times. The other thing as my mother said to me, no two people like their porridge the same way. So I don't know if my porridge is your glop or if you are getting different results with different oats. I haven't used quick oats for this. Don't despair, just use the proportions of water to oats/milk you are used to doing and introduce the grated apple to it. Let's know how you get on.

Thanks for the recipe. Tastes yummy although I didn't use the amount of water your recips says. Isn't 625g of water a lot for such a small amount of oats?

By the way, am I the only one having to spit out bits of cinnamon stick?

Totally love this recipe. Not too thick not too watery. Not too sweet and just the right consistency. I think I am going to eat this every morning.
